Join us this morning as we look at what the bible has to say about DIVORCE and REMARRIAGE. Jesus and his apostles were not silent on this issue, and it takes wisdom and context to discern how to submit to and follow their instruction regarding these very sensitive issues. Over the course of this message one will see how Jesus butted heads with other prominent first century rabbis of his day. One will see how Jesus and the apostles are always for restoration of marriage, yet still allowed divorce in certain cases. Even in a person’s sin, brokenness, and failure, God shows us that He is a God of New Covenant, and in the brokenness of divorce He wants to heal us and lead us into healthy celibacy, and in His timing, for those who desire, into godly remarriages.

This morning we are going to look at the importance and function of marriage vows. Where they come from, what their purpose is, how they can help couples understand the importance of loving and serving one another, as well as how they tie into a biblical understanding of when divorce might be permissible. Paul instructs husbands to “love…nourish and cherish” their wives (Eph. 5:28-29). These are the words used in traditional vows when entering the covenant of marriage. These qualities are the foundations to a healthy marriage and without them there is a possibility of a marriage breaking down and dissolving. Join us as we dig into what the Scriptures teach about the marriage vows of fidelity, provision, and marital rights.

One of the most important aspects to a healthy marriage is healthy communication. James’ instruction to be “quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry” (James 1:19), certainly applies to marriage. And one of the most powerful and important forms of communication in marriage is the sexual act. Join us this morning as we learn what the Scripture teaches about life-giving communication and sex within marriage!

This morning we are going to mainly focus on two sections of Scripture that speak about a theology of marriage: Genesis 2-3 and Ephesians 5. In marriage we leave and cleave (Gen. 2:24). God joins a couple together like glue, and Jesus comments on this verse by telling us to not separate what God has joined (Mark 10:9). If that is to be the case, and marriage is to be highly treasured, then it needs to follow the instructions Paul gives in Ephesians 5. Marriage must look like Jesus: strong incarnate/self-emptying love (which looks like submissiveness and yieldedness), and cross-shaped love (which looks like self-sacrifice and service). Join us!

Scripture is FULL of stories, laws, wisdom, songs, and instruction about relationships. It covers everything from relational heartache to relational ecstasy. In the very beginning of the Bible we are told that God said, “It is not good for man to be alone.” Up until this point in Scripture God had been declaring everything to be good. When God sees man’s loneliness he names that “not good.” God knew that man needed not just a vertical relationship with Him but also horizontal relationships with other people. Join us as we begin diving into what God says about our relational states in life!

This morning we will be unpacking what it means to be a new creature in Christ Jesus. God has taken away the old but He has also filled that cleared out space with new things. In Christ we have new life, new birth, new family, new names, new identity, and new desires! It is so important for us to view ourselves and each other not according to “the flesh” but rather according to what Christ has done for us through His death, resurrection, and bringing about of new creation. Join us this morning dive into what it means for God to be Creator! A God who speaks things into existence out of nothing. A God who does not give the world the “silent treatment” after they messed up. A God who shows us that He is a God who does “a new thing” (Isaiah 43:19). A God who fills redemptive history with multiple pictures of new creation (Noah, Redeemed Israel out of Egypt, and Re-Redeemed Israel out of exile). Ultimately, a God who has made us new and is making us new in Christ Jesus! “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new!” (1 Corinthians 5:17)

Join us this morning as we look at several stories in the Bible of men and women who believed that God was able to do far beyond what they could ask or imagine. King Hezekiah, the Canaanite woman, Abraham, Daniel, Jabez, and the valiant men who lived on the “east side” of the Jordan, all encourage us with the truth that we can bring everything to God in prayer and that He is a God who can do far beyond our wildest dreams.
