THE BLOOD COVENANT (PART 9)

Thursday Nov 07, 2019
God gave the law at Sinai knowing His people would break it. He told Moses, “They will provoke Me and break My covenant…for I know the inclination of their behavior today” (Deut. 31:16, 21). The law was not given to give life. Rather, it was given to magnify sin and witness to Christ as sin’s solution. On top of this, the law always had a time limit. With the coming the new covenant we are no longer under the law and it becomes obsolete (Gal. 3:25; Heb. 8:13). Finally, Paul says that because the law was put to death in the body of Christ we can now be married to Christ instead of the law (Rom. 7:4). Bearing the fruit of love, faith, and holiness comes from our union with our Bridegroom, Christ, rather than from our union with the law. We have a new heart with a different inclination! We have the law written on our heart rather than written on stone! Join us!

When Israel arrives at Mount Sinai God establishes another covenant with them. One of the primary purposes of the Mosaic Covenant was to expose “sin” and “death.” Two diabolical evils in the world. Where did “sin” originate? With the Enemy. Jesus said Satan was “a murderer from the beginning” (John 8:44). Satan rebelled against God and in turn caused Adam and Eve to rebel against God. What was the fruit of sin? “Death” (Rom. 6:20-23). By initiating His covenant at Sinai God exposes the seriousness of sin and death and gives witness to the redeeming grace that will one day come in Christ. Join us as we begin to unpack the Mosaic Covenant!

The reason God brings Israel out of bondage and into the Promised Land solely has to do with God’s promises made to Abraham. IT WAS ALL OF GRACE. God reminds Israel of this again and again. He says, “It is not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you go in to possess their land… for you are a stiff-necked people.” Rather, the promises are SOLELY possessed because of God’s covenant with Abraham. “That He may fulfill the word which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” (Deuteronomy 9:5-6) Join us as we dig into God’s liberating grace FOR YOU that most fully comes to expression in the life and death of Christ! It is THROUGH AND IN CHRIST ALONE that we enter God’s promises and are enabled to love, obey, and serve Him!

W. Kenyon, and John Lake. The lives of each of these men and women help us look to Jesus and believe the Lord in all things.
“Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrew 13:7-8).

In Genesis 17 God continues His covenantal relationship with Abram. First, He gives Abram a new identity. He will now be Abr-AH-am. God is actually breathing His own name into Abram’s name here! Second, God gives Abram the sign of the covenant (circumcision) and tells him that the Promised Seed will not come through Abram’s self effort. This was a tough pill to swallow, but would move Abraham’s covenantal relationship with God to another level. Join us as we see how God’s covenant relationship with Abram applies to our new covenantal relationship with God through Christ!

THE BLOOD COVENANT

The most solemn moment of Jesus with his disciples was when He was in the Upper Room celebrating the Passover with them. He takes the cup, and says, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you” (Luke 22:20). This is a loaded statement. In fact, this is the first time in the Gospels that the word “covenant” came out of Jesus’ lips. So, what does it mean? The fact is, the concept of “covenant” is central to the Scriptures and the message of the gospel. Join us as we begin our journey into the power of the new covenant and the shed blood of Jesus!
